Spotlight on our band of the month: EFYX

- Categories: Band of the month , Default

Hi, EFYX! Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! Can you introduce your project to our readers?
We are a band from Lille, created in 2015. We play a hybrid Rock, at the crossroads of Alternative Rock and Emo-Trap. A first album "Y Boy" was released at the end of 2018. Since then, we've done about fifty concerts, including quite a few festivals. Our second album "Trash For Legacy" was released on November 12th.

What are your main influences?
It's quite broad because I've been through quite a few projects since I started. Originally, I want to mention Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie or Korn for example, but obviously over time, other influences have been added like Lil Peep or even Yelawolf, whom I particularly appreciate. My music is a bit of a synthesis of all that ;) .

After a successful crowdfunding campaign, you released an animated video for the title track "Trash for Legacy" in April 2021. What's the story behind this song?
Well, first of all, it's the title track of the album, so it alone represents a lot of the concept we addressed in it. The video was made during the pandemic, so current events greatly enriched the initial message. We slipped in quite a few messages that made concrete what we wanted to say with this track and more broadly with the album. As for the idea of making an animated video, it was a bit of a response to the circumstances, with the impossibility of shooting a classic video. I really enjoyed it because animation is very permissive in terms of imagination, I set myself no limits. So we follow a character, who finds himself alone after a global pandemic has decimated a large part of the population, through various desolate landscapes such as the desert, Paris, Pripyat...

This track is from your album, "Trash for Legacy", which you describe as being "at the crossroads of several styles". Can you tell us more about it?
Shortly before I started working on this new album, I discovered Lil Peep's music, which literally blew me away. I felt something a bit like Nirvana in its time. I wanted to incorporate into our music this kind of sound that you find in emo trap, without losing the sonic imprint we already had in Y Boy. It was all about alchemy, and in the end, we came out with an album that sounds much heavier than the previous one. Our experience gained in terms of production allowed us to truly make the album we dreamed of, which mixes our rock DNA with more current trends, which has always been my artistic approach.

How does the writing process usually unfold?
For me, there's nothing usual about this process. It's all about circumstances. For "Trash For Legacy", the primary desire was to compose an album very focused on live performance. So the writing began in the middle of the "Y Boy" tour, whose strengths and weaknesses could be experienced in concert. The ambition was to keep the best of it, especially the unifying aspect of the songs, and to enrich all that with a heavier production. In terms of content, we stay in line with certain themes we addressed in "Y Boy" but with a different central concept. If "Y Boy" talked about the Y generation, "Trash For Legacy" is more universal because it deals with the "climate too late".

We had the opportunity to work together on designing your stage setup, merchandise, and CDs for this new album, as well as for "Y Boy" released in 2018. Can you tell us about your experience with Distrolution Merch?
With Distrolution Merch, I've always found a personalized response to my needs, which is very important in our field because we're not manufacturing yogurts lol. We're talking about the material realization of an artistic creation with all the emotional investment it implies, both for the creator and for the person who will receive the object. This relationship of trust is therefore essential and unfortunately, it's not established everywhere.

In general, is there a merch item that you attach particular importance to? If so, which one?
Obviously, even if we take care with everything we do, the heart of the project remains the album itself. For "Trash For Legacy", I worked a lot on the artworks to make sure they perfectly reflect the music. So without hesitation, I would say in our case it's the CD, the other objects being ultimately variations of it.

To wrap up this interview, tell us about your future projects!
Well, for now we're in the middle of releasing the new album, so the primary project is obviously to bring it to life, whether it's live or through other media. For the future, there are no precise plans yet, it will all depend on the doors this album opens for us and the encounters we make.
